Victoria's coastline isn't just about stunning beaches and dramatic cliffs; it's also a haven for marine life, especially during whale migration (May – October). Port Campbell, a charming coastal town along the Great Ocean Road, offers a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures. With whales known for coming close to the coastline, sometimes as close as 100 meters from the beach, the question is will you head to the lookouts or join a tour?

Those on a budget and simply wanting to spot a whale can celebrate with the ability to stay on land. However, if you are wanting a next level experience where you are fully immersed, a boat might be the option for you. Choosing to go on a tour will take you along the changing coastline where experienced marine operate guide and share their knowledge about the whales. Taking a tour You might also encounter playful dolphins, majestic albatrosses soaring on the thermals, or curious seals basking on secluded rock.

Whether you choose to stay on land or take a tour, the choice is yours. When on land remember to bring binoculars to greatly increase your chance of spotting whales in the distance. As whales may take time to surface, keep your eyes peeled and enjoy the beautiful ocean views, a picnic fish and chip meal is always a popular choice while trying to spot whales from the land.
