The Katherine River has been busy over the many years forming the Nitmiluk National Park, famous for its tall sandstone escarpments, beautiful natural swimming holes and rich Aboriginal history.

The number one best thing to do is work up a sweat on the water in a canoe inside Katherine Gorge. Here you will paddle past hidden waterfalls, spot aboriginal rock art and wildlife, and swim between cliffs. Your other options are hoping on a boat or fly in a helicopter for a birds view of the 13 gorge system. Though, canoeing is easily the top pick as you can make your way in areas that other transport simply cannot access. Adventurers can camp at either the 4th, 6th, or 9th gorge camp sites. Availability can run out fast so booking your camp site then hiring the canoe is your best bet if you are set on doing this great overnight trip. A level of fitness will help you traverse rocks between gorges. In need of further information, contact the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre. Beware, crocodiles are likely to be seen sunbathing on the banks but are unlikely to interfere with your day.

Gregory National Park is another great spot for the intrepid traveller. A network of 4WD tracks passing through gorges and desert, with Limestone Gorge being a favourite for fishing, hiking, canoeing, and camping will keep you entertained. Warning, saltwater crocodiles can regularly be found here. It is best advised not to swim and keep an eye out at all times when near water.
