The most significant landmarks in Canberra are undoubtedly the Australian War Memorial (AWM) and Parliament House, as they paint a powerful picture of Australia's past, present, and future.

The Australian War Memorial (AWM) honours those who made the ultimate sacrifice in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. Explore stories of Gallipoli, World War II, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and more, putting yourself in the shoes of those who served. The imposing architecture itself is a silent vigil, while commemorative galleries filled with artefacts, photographs, and personal accounts bring their stories to life. Don't miss the daily Last Post Ceremony at 5PM, a moving tribute to their service.

A visit to Parliament House is about reflecting on a nation that has always looked forwards, similar to Australia’s national animals, the kangaroo and emu, only able to move forward and never back. Everyone is permitted to enter and explore public areas on your own, with information signs and brochures available to help you learn about the building and its history. For a more in-depth discovery, free 1-hour tours on Monday and Friday at 1:30PM, and during school holidays Monday to Thursday at 11:30AM and 1:30PM, and Friday at 1:30PM provide insights you might miss on your own, and can take you to areas not accessible to the general public.

Visiting the free entry AWM and Parliament House in one day presents a powerful juxtaposition. The AWM reminds us of the cost of war and the importance of peace. Parliament House signifies the ongoing pursuit of a better future through democratic ideals. Together, these landmarks offer a deeper understanding of Australia's national identity.
