Allow the traditional landowners to take you into a treasure trove of cultural heritage with tours unveiling the Ubirr and Burrungkay rock art sites. These ancient canvas stories will take you on a journey through time and present what life was like, what it is like, and what it will be like. Best yet, these tours are completely free; you just need to sign up and show your interest in advance, as there are limited spots available.
Sign up for the "Ubirr Rock Art and Sunset Experience" and join a knowledgeable Bininj ranger on a 2-hour exploration (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 4:30-6:30 PM). You'll embark on a 1-kilometer loop track around the main art gallery, deciphering the stories and symbols etched onto the rock face. As the sun dips below the horizon, climb to a breathtaking lookout point, painting the Ubirr landscape in a fiery glow – a truly unforgettable experience.
Complement your exploration with the 90-minute "Burrungkuy Walking Track" tour (Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:30-11 AM). Cover a 1.5-kilometer loop track, delving deeper into the rich tapestry of Kakadu's rock art. The Bininj ranger will illuminate the cultural significance of the art, offering insights into the beliefs and traditions of the Bininj people throughout the ages. While rock art sites can be explored independently, the value of a guided tour cannot be overstated. The rangers not only show you the sights but share stories of their spirits, explaining the meaning behind the symbols, the stories depicted, and the techniques used to create these enduring masterpieces. There really isn’t anything like it.
