Towering over the Illawarra region, Mount Keira beckons adventurous souls with its scenic trails and panoramic coastal views. So come along, get a taste of nature along with a good dose of exercise. The most popular trail is a 5.5-kilometre Mount Keira Ring Track loop that takes roughly 3-4 hours to complete but can be done within 2 hours for the speedy.

This moderate-to-difficult trail starts at a gap between a fence near the roundabout at the corner of the University of Wollongong. Starting with a grass slope, you quickly make your way to a purpose-built path amidst towering eucalyptus forests. As you ascend, keep an eye out for bush turkeys and the rare daytime spotting of deer, much more frequently seen at night roaming the nearby streets. Slowly, you become engulfed in lush rainforest where ferns and birdsong create a tranquil atmosphere.

Eventually reaching the top, a rocky outcrop emerges, and if you have lost the track, some rock climbing adds a rush of adrenaline metres from the summit. While at the top, make sure to walk around and take in the views from different perspectives. Can you spot the Kiama Blowhole, the world’s largest blowhole? How about Wollongong Harbour?

Remember, planning goes a long way to maximising your experience here. Strap on some good walking shoes with grip that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty, and pack a bottle of water.
