Drift Snorkelling

Discover Main Location Page

It is not hard to see why Turquoise Bay was named the best beach in the South Pacific and third best in the world by Trip Advisor in 2022.

Sit back, relax, and soak up the sunshine or go on an exploration by entering the water on the southern end of the beach and have currents drift you around the bay for fantastic snorkelling experience. As you drift, you will see the incredible diversity of marine life where colourful fish dart in and around coral, and turtles glide around. Keep your eyes peeled for playful dolphins, majestic rays, and even reef sharks that are only interested in small fish.

Continuing with the theme of snorkelling, Oyster Stacks, 6 minute drive away, is another great site for marine life but only at high tide. Be careful when entering the water as the oyster shells and rocks can be sharp. Our pro tip is to enter the water at the end of the track and snorkel north or south. Fun fact, oyster shells have been used to extract lime and form a bonding agent for old buildings before concrete was invented. Other recommended snorkel spots include Osprey Bay and Lakeside Lagoon. When it comes to fishing, general experience is that fish stay in the safe protected marine waters where fishing is not allowed. Although, offshore fishing charters are really popular.

Safety must be prioritized when drifting in these waters as currents can be unpredictable, making this activity unsuitable for weak swimmers. Visit the Milyering Discovery Center before heading to Turquoise Bay—the friendly staff can provide valuable information about currents, safety precautions, and ensure you have the best possible experience. Fins will help you navigate the currents and make exiting the water at the northern end of the bay much easier.

When planning your adventure to Turquoise Bay, remember it’s located within Cape Range National Park, about a 40-minute drive from Exmouth. Ensure you have your one-day or multi-day pass ready for park entry fees. Pack essential gear like a snorkel, mask, and fins, and consider a rashguard or wetsuit top for sun protection. Don't forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to stay sun-smart.
