Maxwelton Rest Area serves as relief for travellers traversing the vast expanse of the Outback along the Flinders Highway. Positioned approximately halfway between Richmond (49 kilometres west) and Julia Creek (100 kilometres east), it offers a brief respite from the open road. The rest area provides essential amenities such as toilets and picnic tables, allowing weary travellers to stretch their legs and recharge. There is little shade but it has easy access just off the highway and is nicely set up for overnight stops.
However, it's important to note that Maxwelton Rest Area is designed for short-term breaks rather than extended stays. Its primary purpose is to accommodate travellers who require a brief respite before continuing their journey. There is a lot of room here to set up the van, camper, or tent on the bitumen surface and mobile service, dependent on which provider you are with. Note the maximum stay duration is 20 hours and obey any signage.
