Murphy’s Haystacks is a granite geological marvel. Discovered on a Dennis Muphy’s farm by a Scottish man from afar, believed the sight to be a massive stockpile of hay. These aren’t haystacks but a cluster of ancient, weathered boulders standing a testament to time.

Estimated 1.5 billion years old, imagine the eons that have passed by and the many evolutions including dinosaurs. Note, the earth is estimated to be roughly 4.5 billion years old. Relentless winds and rains have sculptured these massive granite formations into the shapes we see today. Some as high as 8 meters standing extraordinarily precarious yet their pink contrasts beautifully with the blue and surrounding vegetation. Beyond the rocks and immediate environment, you are sure to love the vast views stretching out as far as the Flinders Rangers, making it is easy to imagine how fast winds could reach.

The unique and affordable (an honesty box asks for a donation) is a great outing or rest stop for all no matter age or fitness level, although wheelchairs will struggle. A short walking trail loop will lead you amongst the towering boulders. Informative signage provides geological and historical insights about the area.
